Linh Luong, Maid of Honor
Erin says: "Linh has to be the most genuinely caring, generous and humble person I know. Like me, she is pursuing her PhD in Biomedical Engineering, and we work in the same lab. Grad school is certainly no picnic, and finding such a great friend in a coworker was a huge (and greatly appreciated) lucky break for me.
When we aren't in lab, Linh and I spend most of our time together fighting (but mostly indulging) our sweet-tooths, shopping (but almost never buying anything), and ganging up on Dan during lunch (he makes it so easy and fun). Whatever the case, we're always laughing - Linh's smile is contagious. I'm going to miss her so much when she graduates!"
Victoria Campbell, Bridesmaid
Erin says: "Vicki has more friends on this planet than people I even know; spend any time with her in a public area, and it's guaranteed at least three people she knows will stop to say hello. Despite just how many people she befriends, Vicki somehow manages to give each one a generous piece of her heart and attention. I don't know how she does it, but I'm really lucky to be one of them.
I met Vicki during my first year at Michigan, but she now lives in Alexandria, VA and has a real, paying government job. Was I surprised to hear that she took up the role of social chair and planned the office holiday party? Nope. Not one bit. With her capacity to take charge and get people moving, she's going to be a bridesmaid to be reckoned with should anything go wrong!"
Jessica Graham, Bridesmaid
Dan says: "Jess is quite possibly the sweetest girl on the planet. I met Jess during my junior year at CMU. Like Court, I wish I had met her under less stressful circumstances. Pulling near all nighters in computer labs with no windows is not conducive to successful friendships. Thankfully, weekly cheesecake outings are.
Jess married last year in what was the most enjoyable wedding I've been to. She currently lives in Iowa with her husband, Gavan, and is studying for her doctorate. Since graduate school apparently isn't painful enough, she also runs marathons while downing large quantities of ice cream.
Sadly, Erin and I have only been able to see Jess and Gavan twice since we started school. Since we each only plan on marrying once, we'll have to try and find other ways of running into each other."
Katie McNerny, Bridesmaid
Dan says: "Kate was adopted. That's the only possible explanation for how I could have a sister as pretty and outgoing as she is. She shares my interest in the sciences and has a competitive nature, but I say those can be inherited by one's environment.
Our relationship growing up was probably what one would expect from a big brother-little sister relationship: constant name calling, yelling, and hair pulling. As we got older, I discovered an even more effective weapon in my arsenal to annoy the hell out of her. Constant hugging. Nothing could be more embarrassing than a hug from a brother with a nerdy personality and no fashion sense. So to this day I have to force a hug out of her, even if I only see her twice a year. There will be hugging at this wedding, Kate, be warned.
Despite my teasing, I am incredibly protective. Which is why I'm going to post the worst picture of Kate I own. No hot sister shots allowed.
Kate has now become an engineering nerd- she started her doctoral studies at Carnegie Mellon in material science and engineering last year. She even beat me by getting published first. I don't care where my parents found her- I'm incredibly proud of everything she's accomplished."
David DeFloria, Best Man
Dan says: "I've been friends with Dave since I was eight years old. A mutual love for little league baseball and Pink Panther movies brought us together, and we've acted like immature school boys ever since. He taught me most of the essential curse words. My parents were always afraid he might have given me the birds and the bees talk before they did.
He always made sure I was in just the right amount of trouble.
Most importantly, he's the most loyal friend I have ever had. And he's like that to any friend of his. Dave is getting married (to an Erin, no less) 2 weeks prior to me. And I couldn't be happier for him. He's never stopped working and is finally getting the type of life he deserves.
Since I've moved to school I haven't had as many opportunities to bug Dave as I'd like. We blame it on getting old- but at least we are finding getting old isn't so horrible."
Courtney Heller, Groomsman
Dan says: "Court was my savior in college. I met Court the first day of freshman orientation. Immediately we learned we had entered the Gateway of Hell: 2nd highest workload in the country, Playboy voted our school the ugliest co-eds. Why wasn't this in the brochure? Our freshman roommate assignments were disasters. By the second day of our freshman year, we decided we were going to room together our sophomore year.
Court thankfully let me laugh at our misfortune, and despite my whining and moaning I did manage to have some fun with a large dose of his help. We even graduated. Unfortunately, many of our finer moments are at least PG-13 (real life stalkers, run-ins with crack-heads, really "noisy" neighbors) and not appropriate for the website, but I'm sure Court will talk if you get a couple drinks in him.
Court now lives in warm, sunny San Diego and makes real money. So pretty much, he has the life. Lucky jerk."
Bryan Gatenby, Groomsman
Erin says: "Anyone who thinks I'm stubborn needs to meet my brother. I love a story our mom tells about a time when she repeatedly swatted his hand away from a light switch he wanted to play with as a little kid. Over and over and over...21 times and counting before SHE gave up and moved him away from temptation. You have to give the kid credit for perseverance. The battle of patience became a running theme of his childhood - Bryan knew what he did and didn't want to do, and nobody was going to change his mind.
One of Bryan's favorite pastimes as a kid was dismantling things and tinkering with electronics. If you get a chance, ask him about the device he built that almost got him arrested by the high school's on-site police officer who thought it was a weapon. Quite appropriately, he's now studying electrical engineering technology at UCF in Orlando."
Justin Gatenby, Groomsman
Erin says: "Growing up, Justin was always the sensitive but wild child of my two brothers. He could be so sweet, offering his help and surprising you with his thoughtfulness, but heaven help you if you set off his temper. He was always protective of me, which I found funny since I'm five years older. By the time he reached his teens soccer and baseball had been fully replaced by skate boarding and paintball, and though he tried his hand at violin and piano he quickly dropped them and took up the electric guitar.
Our dad has said that he can't understand how he managed to raise three engineers. Justin, despite all of his efforts to be cooler than Bryan or myself, has joined us on the dark side - he's studying mechanical engineering at UCF."
